The secondary research phase involved an extensive analysis of available academic and industry sources to identify key trends, challenges, and opportunities within the gig economy. This phase was crucial for setting the context, highlighting significant areas of interest, and understanding the financial behaviours. A thematic analysis of the existing material was undertaken.
To complement the secondary research, dipstick research was done based on convenience sampling. The DesignShaala team visited nearby gig dark stores, auto-stands, etc. to speak to gig workers to get a preliminary understanding of their work, finances, etc. Conversations focused on earnings variability, reliance on digital payments, access to credit, and savings behaviour. These informal interactions provided early directional insights, helping refine research hypotheses, shape survey questions, and ensure that the study captured real-world financial pain points.
